Michael J. Schumacher, FILTERS AND FILTERED
This is a sound installation using multiple loudspeakers placed randomly around the room. In this way, the architecture of the room becomes a part of the structure of the music, linking physical space with time. This piece explores by various methods what happens between the data stored on the hard drive and the perceiving of the sound by the brain. Emotionally, surrounding the listener with sound triggers very primitive and powerful responses in the nervous system, since it recalls a time when the ears were more active in the detection of danger. Everything in the installation is “played” by the computer, which makes decisions about rhythm and pitch based on small sets of criteria.
